Rogue has a fantastic lighting demonstration series on their YouTube channel which features several pros showing one of their favorite lighting techniques and how to pull it off yourself. Flash photography can be a little daunting for any photographers that aren’t used to it but folks like Erik Valind, Frank Doorhof and Lindsay Adler show you just how easy it is to create gorgeous, dramatic lighting effects with speedlights and a few accessories.
Some tutorials are relatively easy to pull off, such as this artificial warm lighting demo by Erik Valind or this rock star focused light setup shown by Frank Doorhof. All they need is a single light and either a couple of warming gels or a flash grid.
Others are a little more advanced and require some more equipment like this three light setup demoed by Lindsay Adler for creating the film noir look.
As someone that wears glasses, I found this lighting demo for eliminating eyeglass glare with two lights and the Rogue Flashbender 2 particularly useful.
It’s great they found photographers that are also great instructors and educators. There are plenty of other lighting setup videos on YouTube but this series from Rogue is clear and easy to understand. There’s a new video each week so it’s perfect for anyone looking to expand their photographer’s toolbox.
