Canon unveiled the Powershot G3 X today which packs a 1.0″ CMOS sensor, DIGIC 6, Wi-Fi/NFC and a 25-600mm F2.8-5.6 lens. It’s aimed at photographers that want the advanced features of a DSLR in a more compact body. It’s got some features you’d expect to find on higher-end DSLR and mirrorless cameras, like weather and dust resistance, as well as some that you wouldn’t, like a built-in ND filter.
The name suggests it sits between the G1 X Mark II and G7 X as the “middle model” but the features of each suggest they’re separate but equal. The G1 X sports a smaller number of overall pixels at 12MP but has a larger 1.5″ sensor. The G7 X has the same 20.2MP 1″ sensor and DIGIC 6 processor as the G3 X but in a much more portable, almost pocketable formfactor.
The G3 X would be the superzoom of the bunch as well as the most rugged since the other two are not weather resistant. Other features include a 3.2″, 1.6M dot multi-angle touch screen, 5.9FPS burst mode and star trail modes.
Canon estimates the retail price for the G3 X to be $1,199 and expects the G3 X to ship around July 2015.

This long-zoom, premium compact camera allows users to get close to the action with its bright f/2.8-5.6, 25x Optical Power Zoom Lens (equivalent to 24-600mm). The Canon PowerShot G3 X camera is the most rugged G-series model yet. The combination of enhanced body panel construction with rubber sealing helps ensure this dust-and-water resistant digital camera is ready to shoot action-packed adventures even in some of the most adverse conditions. It also features controls and menu operation inherited from the Canon EOS line of Digital SLR cameras, a first for the PowerShot G-Series. Useful controls include an Auto Exposure (AE) lock button, Auto Focus (AF) selection button and DRIVE/AF button. For photography purists, the PowerShot G3 X camera fully supports both manual exposure control and the user’s choice of RAW, JPEG or RAW+JPEG recording formats. For those looking to shoot from the sidelines, the PowerShot G3 X features high-speed AF and 31 widely spread AF points to help capture fast-action shots with accuracy and ease.
