Canon’s latest flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X Mark II, was announced yesterday, featuring a new 20.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor that’s “designed to meet the demands of the world’s finest professional photographers and the growing need to capture 4K video.”

Capable of shooting full-resolution RAW or JPEGs at 14 frames per second (or 16fps in Live View mode), the 1D X Mark II has dual DIGIC 6+ image processors and a buffer that let’s you shoot up to 170 RAW files continuously at 16fps when using CFast cards.

The Mark I was capable of 1080p at 29.97fps while this time, the Mark II goes to 4K resolution (4096 x 2160…true 4K, not UltraHD 4K) up to 59.94fps. 1080p mode takes you up to 120fps, which you can slow down for 5x slow motion at 24fps. You can also grab 8.8MP still frames while you’re shooting 4K.

Speaking of CFast, the 1D X Mark II is the first Canon DSLR using the newer, faster media after it was introduced with the Canon XC10 4K camcorder last year. Dual slots support Compact Flash (Type 1, UDMA 7) and CFast 2.0.

The 1D X has been the camera of choice for many photojournalists and sports photographers all over the world. The Mark II has 61 autofocus points (41 cross-type), although that may vary depending on what lens you’re using. ISO range spans from 100 to 51,200, up from the Mark I’s 100 to 12,800, and is expandable up to ISO f409,600.

One interesting new feature on the Mark II is Canon’s new built-in image optimization, which corrects lens flaws that cause chromatic aberrations and distortion. This is all done in camera, on-the-fly which is rather impressive and could possibly save some time previously spent on post-processing.

The rear LCD also got an upgrade from the original 1D X. The 3.2″ LCD is now 1.62m dots (up for 1.04m) and a touchscreen that let’s you touch to focus. The new viewfinder (“Intelligent Viewfinder II”) is supposed to show more information than before so that you can make changes to the camera’s settings without taking your eye away. This includes the usual autofocus selection as well as, among other things, an electronic level, grid lines, white balance info and metering modes.

The EOS-1D X Mark II is scheduled for release in April 2016 for an MSRP of $7,999. If you buy between now and June 30th, 2016, Canon will include a SanDisk 64GB CFast memory card and card reader with the camera.
