On the west coast fall means lots of different weather, one day can be rainy, the next sunny, and the following day overcast and foggy. Fall presents lots of photo opportunities and can push you to get creative with the unpredictable weather. A cloudy day can add drama and intensity to a photo, and warm fall sunshine can create wonderful colours and light in your scene. Make sure you are prepared for all kinds of weather and get out and take photos when you might have usually stayed inside.

A few tips for capturing great photos this fall:

Be prepared: Check the weather forecast the night before you’re planning to go take photos, and pack your gear and the necessary accessories depending on the forecast. If it says there’s a slight chance of rain pack a disposable rain cover for that small chance, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Making sure you stay dry and warm is important, so make sure you are dressed for the weather. It will help make taking photos in cold or wet weather much more bearable. Having an idea of the weather in advance can also help you plan where you want to go and what kind of photos you want to take.

Be Observant: Weather can change quickly and in the transition can create unique photo opportunities, keep an eye on what is happening around you and look for interesting changes happening around you. Look at the details of your surroundings and pay attention to how the weather affects them, and you may find photos opportunities that might have been overlooked otherwise.

Watch people: People behave differently in bad weather, keep an eye on the people in your surroundings and watch for great moments to take a photo. Find a place to sit or stand and watch pedestrians passing by. Have your camera ready to snap a photo, as the moment could be over in an instant. So always be prepared to capture the picture.

Colours: On a cloudy day a splash of a bright colour can make a photo pop, whether it’s a person in colourful clothing, or something you find in your surroundings it will help breathe life into what could otherwise muted photo. If the photo looks a little drab, try converting it to black and white. The soft lighting will give great even tones in your photo while eliminating colours lacking punch.
