GoPro Hero 4 Session Announced

Posted by Broadway Camera on 2015-07-10

The GoPro Hero 4 isn’t exactly what you would call big. Actually, even among its action camera brethren, it’s still one of the smaller ones around but GoPro went and shocked everyone this week when they announced an even smaller version of their world conquering GoPro video cameras with the Hero 4 Session.

The Session forgoes the touchscreen LCD of the Hero 4 Silver and the high frame rate/4K capable sensor of the Hero 4 Black in favor of halving the overall size. It looks like they just kept the lens portion of the Hero 4 and got rid of the rest. It weighs just 74 grams.

Video quality from the samples have the same signature GoPro look we’ve become rather accustomed to but resolution tops out at 1440p and 30fps. More than enough for vacation videos or extreme sports but not quite the “serious” filmmaking tool that the Hero 4 Black is.

One interesting new feature is that the Session is waterproof up to 10 meters (33 feet) without a housing, keeping the size small.

The Session only has a single button on the top which turns the camera on and off plus depending on how you pressed it, it can also start video or time-lapse recording. Settings have to be changed using a GoPro remote (not included) or with the app when you connect the Session to your iOS or Android device.

There’s also a new approach to recording audio. Mics on the front and back automatically switch between each other depending on which is more suited for recording at the time, which reduces wind noise.

Several new accessories will also be launched with the Session, including a new set of frames, and all of the Sessions accessories will be compatible with GoPro’s existing mounts.

GoPro says the Session will be available later this month and will retail at $499.99. We’ll have them available at Broadway Camera when they arrive!
