It’s been more than a year since GoPro announced their last new model, the Hero 4 Session, and almost two years since the other Hero 4 cameras. So while it isn’t as big of an event as an iPhone launch, given how ubiquitous the GoPro and action cameras like it are today, plenty of people from extreme sports aficionados, Hollywood cinematographers and just about every other action camera manufacturer have been waiting for GoPro’s next move. The wait is finally over. GoPro has announced the Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session.
The Hero 5 Black shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second, 1440p at 80 frames per second, and 1080p at 120 frames per second. Another new development is that the Hero 5 Black is now waterproof up to 33 feet (10m) without its waterproof casing. GoPro has improved the ease of use of their cameras. For example, you can now use the camera hands-free with the new voice control feature. The integrated touch-screen display has also made its way to the Hero 5 Black. They’ve committed to produce better video and audio recordings for their users with video stabilization and reduced wind noise captured by the camera’s microphone.
Other features include a new 1220mAh battery for longer record times and a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. There’s also GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for remote control with your smartphone or tablet as well as wireless data transfer from the camera to either your computer or GoPro’s new cloud service: GoPro Plus.
The GoPro Session line also received an upgrade today with the Hero 5 Session. It can now capture video in 4K at 30 frames per second, 1440p at 60 frames per second, and 1080p at 90 frames per second. It maintains the small, cube form factor from the original Hero Session for excellent portability and waterproof capabilities up to 33 feet (10m) without any additional housing. The Hero 5 Session also shares the new voice control feature, video stabilization, improved wind noise reduction, and auto upload to GoPro’s cloud service, GoPro Plus from the Hero 5 Black. The micro-USB port has been replaced with the newer and faster USB Type-C.
The Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session will be available starting in October for an MSRP of $529.99 and $399.99 respectively. See the full press release below (note prices in press release are in USD):
