Tamron Announces New 70-200mm F2.8 and 10-24mm Lenses

Posted by Broadway Camera on 2017-02-7

Tamron has two new zoom lenses on the horizon: the SP 70-200mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2, a fast, full-frame telephoto zoom, and the 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD, an ultra-wide zoom for APS-C DSLRs.

SP 70-200mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025)

This update to the A009 model of Tamron’s 70-200mm zoom improves upon the design of it’s predecessor with faster autofocus speed, increased autofocus accuracy and image stabilization that compensates for up to 5 stops (up from 4).

Although the new model features 23 elements in 17 groups with a revised optical formula to improve resolution and contrast while enhancing bokeh throughout the zoom range. Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) and LD class elements work to eliminate chromatic aberrations while a fluorine coating on the front element makes it easier to clean and more resistant to dust, moisture and fingerprints. The lens itself is also moisture-proof and dust-resistant.

10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD (Model B023)

Tamron’s newest 10-24mm ultra-wide zoom covers a focal range of 16mm-37mm on an APS-C sensor DSLR. This is a refresh of the model B001, which Tamron released in 2008.

With 16 elements in 11 groups, the optical design of the new Model B023 is designed for improved optical performance from 10 to 24mm. It uses one Low Dispersion (LD) element, one Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) element and two different types of aspherical element which compensate for a variety of aberrations that occur in wide-angle lenses.

The biggest difference between the older B001 and the new B023 is the inclusion of Tamron’s Vibration Compensation, which lets the photographer use shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than without VC. Surprisingly, the B023 is roughly the same size and only about 40g heavier than the B001.

Both lenses are expected to arrive in March with the SP 70-200mm F.28 Di VC USD G2 Model A025 carrying a retail price of $1,849.99 while pricing for the 10-24 F3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD Model B023 has not been announced yet.
