The best Lenses For Canon EOS R100

The Canon EOS R100 is Canon’s newest entry level mirrorless camera that was released last May 24th, 2023.

It has a 24 Megapixel CMOS, APS-C sized sensor with 4k 24fps video crop capability. It's small in size but big on specs. It makes a really good travel companion with its size, but what other lenses can you bring to get a different look?

The Standard kit lens, It comes with a Canon RF-S 18-45mm lens when you buy the Canon EOS R100. Is it good? It's a capable lens to have when you're starting and having the range gives you flexibility to zoom in and out.

The Zoom Lenses, The Canon RF-S 55-210mm or the Canon RF 100-400mm would be the lenses I would go for if I need the extra zoom. If you’re starting as a wildlife photographer, definitely consider the longer range lens which is the Canon RF 100-400mm. The downside of this lens is the length and its double the price of the Canon RF-S 55-210mm. But keep in mind that you’re buying an RF lens which means if you upgrade to a Full Frame Camera: Canon R5, R6 Mark II, R8 or even the Canon EOS R3. You can use the RF 100-400mm and have full coverage of the sensor.

The Prime lenses, There are so many different prime RF lenses to choose from. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses, but using a prime lens in general will force you to be more creative as you only have one focal length to document or photograph the scene. The prime lenses I would recommend to partner with the new Canon EOS R100 would be the following:

Canon RF 35mm f1.8 Macro (56mm equivalent) This lens is very popular because it gives you a very wide aperture of F1.8 that would give you the ability to separate your subject to the background and give the “cinematic look” that professional photographers get. And it's a MACRO lens as well so you can take photos much closer compared to regular lenses. It's very good in low-light situations as well thanks to its F1.8 aperture.

Canon RF 28mm f2.8 (45mm equivalent) If you want the smallest possible travel camera combo. I would go for the Canon EOS R100 with the new Canon RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens. It’s probably the smallest Canon RF lens right now. It doesn't have the same F1.8 aperture that the RF 35mm has, but at f2.8 you can still get the separation that you want your subject to have against the background.

Other Prime lenses to consider would be the Canon RF 16mm f2.8 (26mm equivalent) or the Canon RF 24mm f1.8 Macro (39mm equivalent). There is a Canon RF 50mm f1.8 as well but you would need to consider the crop-factor that the Canon EOS R100 have and the RF 50mm might be too “tight” as it would give you a 80mm equivalent.

Miscellaneous items to consider: When traveling, an extra battery which is the Canon LP-E17 is always good to have and an extra memory card and a travel cleaning kit!

Hopefully this article would help you determine your ultimate travel camera combo with your Canon EOS R100!

Happy Shooting!
